Hedgerow Heroes:
Biochar sessions

biochar1 web.jpg

For the first time in this project we ran two biochar* making sessions at Treflach Farm, near Oswestry.

*(Biochar is charcoal cooked at a lower temperature with minimal oxygen enabling it to become super aerated with huge internal surface areas that become home to soil microbiology when activated by liquid fertilizer. Biochar ties up carbon permanently whilst improving soil fertility.)

There is growing interest in biochar production and in this instance we will be using the brash from hedgelaying on the farm to make it.

This was a very practical session and included an optional farm hedge walk with the farm manager and a delicious lunch made up of food from Treflach farm shop.

There is more information on Treflach Farm here - they manage the land on permaculture principles.
