Our Focus
CPRE Shropshire is a county branch of the national CPRE charity (once called Campaign to Protect Rural England, now called the Countryside Charity). Based in Shropshire, we have been working for over 70 years to
promote the beauty, tranquillity and communities of the county and aim to ensure the countryside is protected for now and future generations.
Nationally CPRE is concerned with land use across England, urban as well as rural. Our campaigning is evidence-based, reasoned and authoritative. We are experts in the planning system at all levels, local, regional and national. We offer advice and guidance to members of the public concerned about inappropriate planning applications local to them. We also work with other agencies, where appropriate and with schools and parish councils.
See below for areas of particular focus for CPRE Shropshire.

01
Planning in Shropshire
Shropshire is a largely rural county, still known for its tranquillity, beautiful countryside and attractive market towns and villages. However, this also brings pressure for new housing from local people wishing to stay in the area, but also from people retiring into Shropshire and from would-be commuters. CPRE specialises in planning and we work within the planning system to further the protection of nature, local communities and countryside character.

Renewables in Shropshire
We would not be who we are without our eco-friendly design, which is at the core of our strategy. We are constantly working to improve our offerings and expand upon our capabilities when it comes to design and production. Get in touch to learn more.
03
Intensive Poultry Units (IPU) in Shropshire
A major threat to Shropshire’s countryside (and that of our neighbouring counties of Herefordshire and Radnorshire) today is the rapid growth in the intensive livestock industry, which is generating a wave of industrial complexes across the rural landscape.
Did you know that, according to our calculations, as at July 2019, in the counties of Shropshire, Herefordshire and Powys there are 500 farms with a total of 1,420 intensive poultry units/sheds, containing over 44 million birds?
04
Hedgerows
Hedgerows have always been important to CPRE, nationally as well as regionally.
In Shropshire, have been running a practical hedgerow project (Hedgerow Heroes) since 2021 and hope, funding allowing, to continue our hedge creation work in the winter of 2025/26.
As well as planting hedges we have been running hedgelaying workshops and a number of other associated events.
